Tree permit rules in the Town of Babylon
Trees in the public right-of-way are the town's and need approval. Removing smaller trees from your own residential property generally doesn't need a permit. Always check the rules for your village or for larger or protected trees.
- Right-of-way / street trees: contact the town before any work.
- Private yard trees: generally exempt below roughly 5–6" diameter. Confirm for larger trees.
- Incorporated villages (Lindenhurst, Babylon, Amityville) have separate codes.
- Hire a Suffolk County–licensed home-improvement contractor. It's required for tree work.

Villages with their own tree laws: Lindenhurst, Babylon, Amityville. If one of these is on your tax bill, its rules apply.
Trees, pests and problems we see in Babylon
Post-war street and yard plantings: maples, pin oaks, London planes, Bradford pears (which split apart in wind as they age) and pines. Many were planted in the 1950s and are now at or past maturity.
Soil, weather and storm exposure
The low-lying South Shore. Lindenhurst, Copiague, Amityville and West Babylon were among the hardest-hit areas in Superstorm Sandy (2012), and salt-water flooding stressed or killed many trees. Sandy soil and a high water table make storm uprooting common.
Homes, lots and access
Small post-war lots (often 50–60 ft wide) with homes, garages and above-ground pools close together, plus many houses raised after Sandy. Tight side yards mean small equipment, more hand-carrying and more sectional climbing work.
What drives the price in Babylon
Trees are smaller on average than on the North Shore, so prices are often mid-range, but tight access and overhead wires add time. Bradford pear and storm-split removals are common quick jobs.
Long Island baseline: small trees $300–$800, medium $700–$2,000, large $1,500–$3,500+, and stump grinding $150–$500 per stump. See the tree removal cost guide and stump grinding costs.

- Stump & Root Removal: Full extraction of the stump and main roots when you need to replant, build a patio or pour footings in the same spot.
- Emergency & Storm Tree Removal: A tree on the house, car, fence or driveway after a nor'easter or tropical storm, with help documenting it for insurance.
- Tree Trimming & Pruning: Limbs over the roof, deadwood, storm-prep thinning and clearance, done to keep the tree healthy rather than topping it.

Babylon tree removal FAQ
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in West Babylon?
For a typical tree on your own residential lot, generally no. Trees between the sidewalk and the street belong to the town, so contact it before touching those.
My Bradford pear split in half. Can it be saved?
Rarely. Bradford pears have weak, narrow branch unions that tend to fail again. Removal and a stronger replacement species is usually the better call.
Does Lindenhurst follow Town of Babylon rules?
Lindenhurst is an incorporated village with its own code, as are Babylon Village and Amityville.
