Tree permit rules in the Town of Islip
Chapter 57 bars cutting or removing any tree without the property owner's written consent. Clearing land of trees and brush requires a land-clearing permit through Planning. Typical single-tree removals on private residential lots generally don't need a town permit, but confirm for large or protected trees.
- Owner's written consent is required for any tree work, which matters for renters, estates and shared property lines.
- Land clearing needs a permit with a survey showing the areas to be cleared and all trees over 10".
- Trees near wetlands or in historic districts may need approval.
- Right-of-way (street) trees are the town's. Contact DPW.

Trees, pests and problems we see in Islip
Bay-front hamlets have oaks, maples, black cherry and aging ornamental plantings. Inland (Central Islip, Brentwood, Ronkonkoma) it shifts to pitch pine and oak on the edge of the Pine Barrens, where southern pine beetle has been killing pitch pines on Long Island.
Soil, weather and storm exposure
Low, sandy South Shore ground along the Great South Bay with a high water table. Saturated sand plus wind off the bay make whole-tree uprooting in nor'easters and tropical storms a recurring pattern in Bay Shore, Islip, Sayville and Bayport.
Homes, lots and access
Waterfront and canal homes in West Islip, Bay Shore and Sayville, Victorian-era houses in Sayville and Bayport, and dense post-war neighborhoods in Brentwood and Central Islip. Many backyards back onto canals, docks and bulkheads, where access is from the water side or through tight side yards.
What drives the price in Islip
Storm work is a big share of Islip calls, and after-hours emergency rates run higher. Waterfront access and bulkhead protection add time. Inland pine removals are usually simpler and cheaper.
Long Island baseline: small trees $300–$800, medium $700–$2,000, large $1,500–$3,500+, and stump grinding $150–$500 per stump. See the tree removal cost guide and stump grinding costs.

Islip tree removal FAQ
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in my Bay Shore yard?
A single tree on your own residential lot generally doesn't need a Town of Islip permit, but you must be the owner (or have their written consent). Clearing many trees, or work near wetlands, needs town approval.
I'm in Brightwaters. Do town rules apply?
Brightwaters is an incorporated village with its own code. Check with the village.
Are dead pitch pines near my house a risk?
Beetle-killed pines dry out and break unpredictably, especially in wind. If needles have turned red-brown or there are pitch tubes on the bark, have the tree assessed.
